Učka Mountain Day Trip
Escape the coast for a day and climb the mountain that protects Opatija from winter winds. Učka Nature Park rises to 1,401m at Vojak peak — the highest point of Istria. On clear days, the view from the top includes Venice, the Dolomites, and the entire Kvarner archipelago.
Drive to Poklon Pass (20min from Opatija), park, and hike 2h to the summit. The stone tower at the top has a 360° observation deck. Bring layers — it's 10°C cooler up there. Spring wildflowers (May-June) are spectacular.
The trail from Poklon is well-marked (red and white blazes) and mostly through beech forest. The last 30 minutes open up into alpine meadows with wildflowers and butterflies. The summit tower was built in 1911 and recently restored — climb the spiral staircase for the full panorama.
Pack lunch — there's a mountain lodge (Učka Lodge) near the trailhead that serves hearty local food (bean stew, grilled meats), but it's not always open outside of weekends. Bring at least 1.5L of water per person. The hike is moderate — some steep sections, but anyone in reasonable fitness can do it. Not recommended in rain or fog (you'd miss the entire point: the view).
