Lungomare Coastal Walk
The Lungomare is Opatija's crown jewel — a 12km promenade carved into the coastline from Volosko to Lovran. Built in 1889, it hugs every cove, passes hidden swimming spots, and offers views that make you stop and stare every 200 meters.
Start in Volosko (coffee at Kaokakao first), walk south through Opatija center, past the Girl with a Seagull statue, under the Habsburg villas, through Ičići, and finish in Lovran old town for lunch at Kvarner. Flat the entire way, stroller-friendly. Best at sunset when the Kvarner Bay turns gold.
The path is paved and well-maintained, lit at night in the central section. You'll pass tiny coves where locals swim — some have ladders down to the water, some are just rocks and courage. In summer, bring a swimsuit and stop wherever looks inviting. In winter, the empty promenade with crashing waves is almost more beautiful.
Pro tip: walk from Volosko to Lovran (south), not the other way. The morning light hits better, and you end at Lovran's old town where the lunch options are better. Take bus 32 back to your starting point — it runs every 20 minutes along the coast road above.
