10 Things to Do in Opatija When It Rains

By Opatija.info·

Rain Happens — Here's How to Enjoy It

Opatija gets its fair share of rain, especially in autumn and spring. The mountains behind town (Učka, 1,396m) catch weather systems coming off the Adriatic, and when it rains, it properly rains. But a rainy day here doesn't have to mean staring at your hotel ceiling. Some of the best Opatija experiences actually happen indoors.

1. Thalasso Wellness at Hotel Navis or Remisens

This is the obvious one, but it's obvious for a reason. Opatija was literally founded as a health resort — the Habsburgs came here for the healing sea air and thermal treatments. Hotel Navis has a stunning infinity pool overlooking the sea (even better in rain, honestly), and the Remisens Premium Hotel Ambasador has a full thalassotherapy centre. Budget €40-60 for a half-day spa experience.

2. Villa Angiolina — Croatian Tourism Museum

The building where Croatian tourism literally began — Iginio Scarpa built this villa in 1844 and started inviting European aristocracy to visit. Now it's a museum tracing Opatija's transformation from fishing village to Habsburg resort. Small but fascinating, and the botanical garden around it is beautiful even in the rain. Entry is about €4.

3. Coffee Crawl Through Opatija's Cafés

Croatia's coffee culture is seriously underrated. A rainy morning is perfect for hopping between Opatija's best cafés. Start at Kaokakao for excellent specialty coffee and pastries, then wander to Café Wagner (historic, Viennese-style) on the main strip. Croatians treat coffee as an event — you're expected to sit for an hour minimum. Embrace it.

4. Cooking Class — Learn Istrian Cuisine

Several local operators run hands-on cooking classes where you make fuži pasta from scratch, prepare dishes with seasonal truffles, and roll out šurlice (hand-twisted pasta). You eat everything you cook, usually with plenty of local wine. Book through your hotel or check for classes in Volosko — a cooking class in a fishing village kitchen is hard to beat.

Volosko has quietly become a hub for Croatian contemporary art. Small galleries dot the narrow streets — you won't find them on Google Maps, just wander and look for open doors. The Volosko Art Colony hosts rotating exhibitions, and several artists have open studios. Free, uncrowded, and genuinely interesting.

6. Rijeka Day Trip

Rijeka is 15 minutes by bus and has plenty of indoor options: the Maritime and History Museum, the Astronomical Centre (great for kids), Korzo street for shopping, and the covered Central Market (Tržnica) where you can buy local cheese, olive oil, and produce. Rijeka was European Capital of Culture 2020, and its cultural scene is surprisingly strong.

7. Wine Tasting at a Local Konoba

Rain is the perfect excuse to spend an afternoon working through Croatian wines. Most konobas will happily walk you through a tasting — try malvazija (Istria's signature white), žlahtina from Krk island, and teran (a bold, earthy red from Istria). Pair it with local cheese and prosciutto. A proper tasting with food runs €20-30.

8. Opatija's Bookshops and Antique Shops

There's a lovely old bookshop on Maršala Tita (the main street) with a surprising English-language section and beautiful old maps. The antique shops nearby have genuine Habsburg-era finds — postcards from 1900s Opatija, old hotel silverware, vintage travel posters. Perfect rainy-day browsing.

9. Cinema Opatija

The local cinema shows international films (usually in original language with Croatian subtitles) and tickets are around €5-7. It's a proper old-school cinema — not a multiplex — with character and comfortable seating. Check the schedule at the Tourist Board or ask your hotel.

10. Just Walk the Lungomare in the Rain

Hear me out. The Lungomare in the rain is actually magical. The crowds vanish completely, the sea turns dramatic shades of grey and green, and the wet stone path glistens. Bring a proper rain jacket, skip the umbrella (the wind will destroy it), and walk the Volosko-to-Opatija section. You'll have the entire coastline to yourself, and there's something deeply satisfying about it.

Stop at a waterfront café afterward for a hot čaj (tea) or topla čokolada (hot chocolate) and feel extremely smug about your rain walk decision.

The Real Secret

Rainy days in Opatija aren't days to endure — they're days to slow down. The town was built for leisurely indoor pleasures: long meals, spa treatments, coffee that lasts two hours, wine tastings that drift into the evening. Some of my favourite Opatija memories happened on grey, wet afternoons. Embrace the rain.
