How to Get Around Opatija Without a Car

By Opatija.info·

The Good News First

Opatija is one of the most walkable towns on the Croatian coast. The town centre is compact, the Lungomare connects the entire coastline on foot, and most of the best restaurants, beaches, and attractions are within a 20-minute walk of anywhere you're likely to stay. You absolutely do not need a car to enjoy Opatija — in fact, driving here can be more hassle than it's worth, especially in summer when parking becomes a competitive sport.

That said, a car is helpful for day trips to Istria or Plitvice. Here's how to handle everything else.

Walking — Your Primary Transport

The Lungomare promenade is not just a tourist attraction — it's a practical transport route. The flat, paved path connects Volosko (north) through Opatija centre to Ičići and on to Lovran (south), a total of 12 kilometres. Most visitors stay somewhere along this strip, which means your daily "commute" to the beach, a restaurant, or a cafe is a scenic coastal walk.

Key walking times from Opatija centre:

  • Volosko harbour: 20-25 minutes
  • Slatina Beach: 5 minutes
  • Angiolina Park: 3 minutes
  • Ičići Beach: 30-35 minutes
  • Lovran: 90 minutes (or take the bus)

The town itself is hilly — streets going uphill from the coast can be steep. But anything along the Lungomare and the main promenade (Maršala Tita street) is level.

Buses — Better Than You'd Expect

Autotrans runs the local bus network, and it's decent. The most useful route is Line 32, which runs along the coast from Rijeka through Opatija to Lovran (and some services continue to Mošćenička Draga). Buses run every 20-30 minutes during the day, less frequently in the evening.

Key details:

  • Tickets: Buy from the driver. A single trip is around €2-3. Keep some coins handy.
  • Rijeka: Bus 32 gets you to Rijeka in 25-30 minutes. Very convenient for the market, museum, or nightlife.
  • Lovran/Mošćenička Draga: Same line, 15-25 minutes south.
  • Schedules: Check Autotrans.hr or the timetables posted at bus stops. Service is reduced on Sundays.

For longer trips (Pula, Rovinj, Zagreb), intercity buses depart from Opatija's bus station. FlixBus and Arriva operate routes to most Croatian cities. Book online for the best prices — a Rijeka-to-Zagreb ticket is about €12-18.

Taxis — Affordable and Reliable

Local taxis are reasonably priced and widely available. You'll find taxi stands at key points (by Hotel Kvarner, at the bus station, near the main parking areas). Some useful fares:

  • Within Opatija: €5-8
  • Opatija to Rijeka: €20-25
  • Opatija to Rijeka Airport: €25-35
  • Opatija to Lovran: €15-20

Uber technically works in the area but coverage is spotty — you might wait 15-20 minutes. Bolt (the European ride-hailing app) sometimes has better availability. For reliability, call a local taxi company or ask your hotel to book one. Taxi Opatija (+385 51 271 777) is a safe bet.

Bike Rental — Underrated Option

E-bikes and regular bikes are available from several rental shops in the centre. The Lungomare isn't officially a bike path (pedestrians have priority), but early morning rides along the coast are magical. More practically, a bike opens up Ičići and Lovran as easy day trips without waiting for a bus.

E-bike rental runs about €25-35/day, regular bikes €15-20. Some hotels include bike access. The terrain is coastal (flat along the promenade) but gets hilly fast if you head inland.

For the adventurous, Učka mountain has excellent mountain biking trails — rent a proper mountain bike from one of the activity operators and take the guided trail from Poklon Pass down.

Ferries — For Island Adventures

If you want to visit the islands (Cres, Krk, Lošinj), ferries are the car-free option. Jadrolinija operates regular catamaran services from Rijeka to Cres, Mali Lošinj, and Rab in summer. It's a beautiful way to travel — the Kvarner Bay from a boat is spectacular.

The Brestova ferry (to Cres island) is closest to Opatija but you'll need a car or bus to reach it. For foot passengers, the Rijeka catamaran is more practical.

Rental Cars — If You Want Day Trip Freedom

If you plan day trips to Plitvice, inland Istria, or multiple coastal towns, renting a car for a day or two makes sense. Rates start at €35-50/day. Oryx, Sixt, and Carwiz have offices in Opatija or nearby Rijeka. Book online in advance during summer — prices jump at the counter.

A tip: don't rent for your whole stay. Walk and bus for Opatija itself, then rent for one or two dedicated day-trip days. That way you avoid parking headaches and save money.

The Bottom Line

Opatija is built for walking. Buses handle the coast and Rijeka. Taxis fill the gaps. A car is nice for exploring Istria but unnecessary for the town itself. Leave the driving stress behind — you're on holiday. Walk the Lungomare, catch the bus to Lovran, and let someone else worry about parking.
