Kavana Wagner

4.5

Kavana Wagner is Opatija in a single room. Opened in 1896, when the town was the jewel of the Austrian Riviera, this grand cafe has survived empires, wars, and the rise of Starbucks without losing an ounce of its character. The interior is all high ceilings, ornate mirrors, and marble-topped tables — the kind of place where Franz Joseph might have sipped his morning coffee. The terrace overlooking the sea is the main draw, especially on warm evenings when the promenade comes alive. Grab a window table and watch Opatija's daily parade of walkers, joggers, and couples doing their evening passeggiata. The coffee is traditional Croatian — strong, properly made, served with the mandatory glass of water. But the real reason to come is the strudla. Wagner's apple strudel is the benchmark against which all Opatija strudel is measured — paper-thin pastry, tart apples, a dusting of powdered sugar, and that unmistakable flaky pull when you cut it with a fork. A coffee and strudla runs about €5-6, which is the best deal in town when you factor in 128 years of atmosphere. The cake display also features kremšnita (custard slice), Sachertorte, and seasonal fruit tarts. Everything is made in-house. Come for the coffee, stay for dessert, leave with the feeling that you've touched Opatija's soul.
