Učka Nature Park: Hiking Above the Adriatic

By Opatija.info·

The Mountain Behind the Riviera

Mount Učka rises directly behind Opatija like a natural fortress — 1,401 meters of limestone, beech forest, and wildflower meadows separating the coast from inland Istria. For centuries, it protected Opatija from the bora wind, creating the mild microclimate that made it a resort town. Today, it's a nature park and one of the best day hikes you can do from anywhere on the Croatian coast.

The Main Trail: Poklon to Vojak

The most popular (and most rewarding) hike starts at Poklon Pass, a mountain saddle at 922m that you can drive to in 20 minutes from Opatija. There's a parking area (€2), a mountain lodge, and the trailhead for Vojak summit.

The trail is well-marked with red and white blazes — standard Croatian mountain markings. From Poklon, it's about 2 hours to the summit and 1.5 hours back down. The first hour is through dense beech forest — shady, cool, with birdsong everywhere. Then the trees thin out and you emerge into alpine meadows. In May and June, these meadows explode with wildflowers — orchids, gentians, buttercups — it's genuinely spectacular.

Vojak Summit: The View

The summit of Vojak (1,401m) has a stone observation tower built in 1911 and recently restored. Climb the spiral staircase and you get a 360° panorama that, on clear days, includes: the entire Kvarner Bay and its islands (Krk, Cres, Lošinj), the Istrian peninsula, the Velebit mountains to the south, the Julian Alps to the northwest, and — on exceptionally clear days — the Venice skyline and the Dolomites. It's genuinely one of the best viewpoints in the Adriatic.

Other Trails

If Vojak feels like too much, there are easier options. The forest path from Poklon to the botanical garden (1 hour round trip, flat) is beautiful and family-friendly. The trail to Plas peak (1,285m) is shorter and less crowded than Vojak. For the ambitious, the old path from Lovran directly up the mountain (3-4 hours, steep, 1,000m elevation gain) is a serious workout with serious views.

Practical Tips

Getting there: Drive from Opatija toward Učka Tunnel, take the exit for Poklon before the tunnel entrance. 20 minutes, well-signposted. No public transport — you need a car or taxi (€20-25 each way).

What to bring: Hiking shoes (trail is rocky in parts), 1.5L water per person, sunscreen, a warm layer (it's 10°C cooler at the top), lunch or snacks. The mountain lodge at Poklon sometimes serves food on weekends, but don't count on it.

When to go: May through October is ideal. Spring (May-June) for wildflowers, autumn (September-October) for colors and the clearest views. Summer works but it's hot — start early. Avoid rainy or foggy days; the summit view is the entire point.

Safety: The Poklon-Vojak trail is well-marked and not technically difficult. Bring a charged phone. Tell someone where you're going. The mountain has cell coverage on the summit but spotty coverage in the forest. In winter, trails can be icy — bring microspikes or skip it.
