Maiden with the Seagull (Djevojka s galebom)

You'll see this statue on every postcard, fridge magnet, and Instagram feed about Opatija. The Maiden with the Seagull has been standing on the rocks since 1956, replacing an earlier Madonna statue destroyed in a storm. She's become the symbol of the city, and for good reason — there's something about the way she stands against the sea that just works. Best time to visit: sunset. Best angle: from the Lungomare approaching from the south. Bring a camera, obviously.
