Lungomare (Franz Joseph Promenade)

The Lungomare is Opatija's reason for existing. This 12km coastal walkway runs from Volosko to Lovran, hugging the shoreline the entire way, and it's been doing so since 1911 when the Austro-Hungarian empire built it for their vacationing aristocrats. Today it's the beating heart of the town — joggers in the morning, families in the afternoon, couples at sunset. Budget about 3 hours one way, or just walk a stretch and turn back. It's free, it's beautiful, and on a clear day you can see the islands of Cres and Krk across the water.
